Scandinavian design is characterised by its functionality, minimalism and clean lines. Although the Scandinavian design movement originally emerged during the early 20th century, coming to prominence in the 1950s, it has recently experienced a sharp spike in popularity. Scandinavian interior design combines the styles of several Nordic countries, such as Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. The design is heavily influenced by the typical Nordic environment, such as cold winters, small houses and the desire for interiors to be cosy, bright and airy (hygge).
